Anhangá

Anhangá is a spirit in Tupi and Mawé mythology. These native people from modern-day Brazil believed this spirit wandered the forest protecting the game from the hunters. A shapeshifter, who often appeared as a white deer with red eyes, Anhangá was capable of bringing harm to people. For that, he was associated by Christians to the Devil, in a misrepresentation of the nuanced characteristics of this spirit in its own culture, as was the case with many other spirits and deities from non-christian traditions. Here, he is portrayed in his supernatural might. Not an evil demon, but a fierce protector of the wildlife, in a reimagined version of his red-eyed, deer-like appearance.
